Many experts believe that such a move to produce electric pickup trucks and SUVs would be a great move for the company. On the one hand, the demand for such electric vehicles is only growing, but on the other hand, the brand itself is already well known and does not need advertising. That is, half of the marketing company has already been paid for and is waiting for the official start of production. According to preliminary data, they plan to invest $ 3 billion in the construction and equipment of the Detroit plant. In the future, additional capitalization and investment will amount to another $ 7.7 billion over 4 years. In parallel with the construction of a new plant and the development of an electric Hummer pickup, GM plans to create an electric SUV Cadillac, closer to 2023. The codename for the family of electric pickups and SUVs is BT1. It is for this direction that the manufacturer will use a completely new architecture, including a completely new chassis, which includes a battery and an electric motor. Given these specs and base, the starting price of the electric pickup will be $ 90,000, while the SUV will start at $ 100,000.
According to Mark Reis, president of General Motors, the new EV architecture will be flexible. This will make it possible to simultaneously assemble front, rear and all-wheel drive variants of electric vehicles on its basis. Closer to 2024, production is planned to be launched at full capacity, producing about 80,000 electric cars per year.
According to representatives of General Motors, by the end of 2023, the line of electric cars will be 20 models, and the total investment in the development of electric cars and unmanned vehicles will amount to about $ 8 billion.
