The company Takata, which makes the airbags, will have to pay compensation of $ 10 million to victims of the accident. This decision was made by an American court. The scandal itself regarding the Japanese airbag manufacturer Takata began back in 2014. It was then that the National Security Council in the United States identified shortcomings and malfunctions in certain batches of airbags from Japan. The owners of 4.7 million cars were given a condition to come to dealerships to replace the airbags. Eight major manufacturers were targeted for the recall campaign.

Among the list of potential auto manufacturers are Mitsubishi, Mazda, Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Honda, Chrysler and BMW. The reason for the breakdown of airbags is called high humidity, due to which the airbags can arbitrarily deploy and throw metal parts into the passenger compartment. According to various sources, about 70 million cars with defective airbags were recalled over the years in the United States. The failure of the pillows resulted in the death of at least 16 people and the injury of about 250 people. In general, about 24 people died in the world due to defective airbags. Japanese manufacturer Takata pleaded guilty, therefore, it was decided to pay about $ 1 billion for a criminal punishment in fraud. Of this amount, 125 million will be paid to the victims, and the remaining 875 million will be transferred to auto manufacturers for a recall campaign and replacement of airbags with better quality copies. Starting August 6, the first 9.8 million 102 airbag victims will be paid. Depending on various factors and injuries, the payout will range from $ 608,013 to $ 643,400.

Since the start of the recall campaign, only 31.8 million damaged airbags have been replaced. In total, 50 million copies fell under the replacement. In total, 37 million cars were produced with such unfinished pillows. In all likelihood, in the next two years, the number of cars with defective pillows will increase by 20 million, since it is not known for certain where these copies are still stored.
