The eighth generation of the new Chevrolet Corvette surprised with an unusual roadster sports car. In the list of the company, the novelty is referred to as the Corvette Stingray Convertible. For the first time, the eighth generation of the new Corvette Stingray was presented in the summer of 2019. The peculiarity of this model is that it is the first mid-engined sports car. At the official show there was a novelty in the basic configuration and the targa body.
The manufacturer decided not to stop there, presenting for the first time in the history of the company a new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray in the back of a roadster Convertible. The peculiarity of this model is that the folding roof is rigid, but all previous models were equipped with a soft folding roof. The hardtop of the new Corvette Stingray is hidden in a special compartment behind the seats, and the designers have redesigned the fairing to look like two humps behind the headrests, and the new sports car has lost the glass cover above the engine. Thanks to 6 electric motors, at a speed of 48 km / h, the roof can be folded and unfolded in 16 seconds. Recall that in the previous generation, the roof was moved by hydraulics. Another plus in the new generation is the roof color, depending on the configuration, it can be painted in body color or black.
As for the rear window, it slides vertically and can serve as a windscreen. It can be activated separately from the roof by pressing a special button in the interior of the roadster. With the addition of the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray's rigid roof, the total weight of the roadster has increased by 46 kg. Accordingly, the weight distribution along the axes has also changed. The sports car engineers had to readjust the suspension.
The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray unit remained unchanged, it is the same for both the targa and the roadster. Engineers hid an atmospheric gasoline V8 labeled LT2 (in fact, this is a modified version of LT1). The new sports car for the first time received a dry sump lubrication system. The total power of the unit is 502 horses, and the maximum torque is 637 Nm. In tandem with the engine, there is an 8-speed robotic transmission with two wet clutches. The gearbox was developed in cooperation with the manufacturer Tremec.
One point that the manufacturer did not disclose is the dynamic characteristics of the new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray roadster. If we talk about the basic sports car in the back of a targa, then from 0 to 96 km / h it accelerates in less than 3 seconds, while the maximum speed is 312 km / h.
The start of production of the roadster is planned to begin before the end of 2019. As for the cost, in the base version it will cost from $ 67,000, which is $ 7,500 more than the regular targa model. Another statement was that the manufacturer plans to release a right-hand drive model, which will go purely for export.
